Is Muammar Gaddafi’s Son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Really Released?

After about six years the son of Col Muammar Gaddafi has been freed from a jail in Libya. It is not yet known what Saif al-Islam Gaddafi would next do. He was once about to succeed his father as leader of the country.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was detained in 2011 by militia brigade and now one of his lawyers confirmed his release.

However, it is not to forget the same was claimed last year too, but later the news appeared to be untrue. He probably may have been a free man in theory but he was never seen outside the Zintan outskirts, where he was held.

Gaddafi’s lawyer has not yet disclosed in which location he has been kept for security reasons. If not in Zintan, it is believed to be in eastern Libya. Some say he is in south while others guess he may have headed to the town of Bani Walid, which was one of the last places to collapse during the 2011 conflict. A small group of people also suggest he may be in Egypt.

His lawyer claims the man may play an important role in national reconciliation efforts, but the confirmation may only come after he makes a statement.

In July 2015 the junior Gaddafi was sentenced to death by a Tripoli court, but without his presence.

Gaddafi was captured by militia on 19 November 2011 when he was trying to flee south to Niger.

His father and a younger brother were killed by militia in October 2011.

The uprising against his father’s government started in February 2011.
