President John Magufuli has warned people not to take part in any illegal demonstration or else face severe crackdown as street protests lead to derailment of economic reforms.
Nicknamed as ‘the Bulldozer,’ the president introduced several anti-corruption measures and various economic reforms like reducing the wasteful government spending after taking presidential oath.
Addressing to the people in northwestern part of the country on Friday the president said, “Some people have failed to engage in legitimate politics: they would like to see street protests everyday… Let them demonstrate and they will see who I am.”
Since November 2015 the president has managed slashing down spending and has stopped millions of dollars from being spent on ghost workers. Tax collection revenue has increased too and now in every store, gas station and coffee shop one can find a digital tax collector. Revenue at Dar es Salaam port has increased lately.
For his work the president had earlier bagged the Mandela Peace Prize.
Based on 4,955 favored applicants the Mandela Peace Prize jury cited immense contribution of Magufuli to the promotion of peace and social equality in the country led him to grab the award.
The president was honored with the award by Africa’s richest monarch, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, who had won the title last year.
Mandela Prizes are annual events and honors personalities as well as institutions for laudable actions in favor of Africa and Peace.
Magufuli is also one of the lowest paid leaders in Africa. His monthly salary is about $4,000.
