Mr Massawe made the remarks at a function held at Mugana Designated Hospital in Misenyi district on Wednesday when a German-based woman, Mrs Stella Braun Mutaboyerwa, donated various hospital equipment worth 25m/-.
Mrs Mutaboyerwa (52), who now resides in Germany with her family, told the ‘Daily News’ in an interview that two years ago she visited Mugana hospital during her vacation and was approached by its management team who requested her to find donors to enable them get some essential equipment.
“When I went back to Germany, I contacted the Rotary Club and the people in Germany were so willing to contribute various items, including operating equipment, a fridge for the blood bank, wheelchairs, mosquito nets for children and bed sheets, all worth 25m/-,” she said.
She disclosed that she had donated about 15 sewing machines and metres of cloth to enable Magana hospital start a vocational training centre to enable some primary school leavers to generate income through self-help employment.
Mr Massawe said the region had many professionals including professors, doctors, engineers and lawyers with the potential to push forward the region’s development pace. He said the region was currently lagging behind in development, holding the 19th position among 21 regions.
“Kagera region was among leading regions in 1961 when Tanganyika won its independence. It is sad to note that the region has now fallen backward. My appeal is to all the people hailing from this region to come back and invest at home,” he said.
Mr Massawe said challenges facing the region should not discourage people but should prompt them to work harder. For many decades the region has been viewed as a banana-and-plantain country, the land of coffee… the land of plenty.
