Kambi told to investigate graft claims at NCPWD

Nairobi, Kenya: Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWD) want Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi to fight graft that has rocked the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD).

The group claimed persons with disability have continued to suffer at the hands of a few corrupt individuals and now want the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to prosecute the corrupt individuals.

Led by nominated Senator Paul Njoroge, they said that Government officials who have been robbing the poor have continued to work at the Ministry of Labour and the old district offices of the Gender, Children and Social Services ministry.

“We are aware of the very deep rooted corruption activities and the extended networks of corrupt officials. The Director of Public Prosecutions must now act on the audit report and institute prosecution against the corrupt individuals. We demand accountability,” said Mr Njoroge.

The report recommended that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) should commence investigations into the entire board of trustees for their role in corruption.

Njoroge said persons with disabilities have for many years complained about alleged mega corruption in the allocation and expenditure of huge sums of money disbursed from national coffers for projects and development programmes across the country, but no action has been taken.

Speaking at a Press briefing in a Nairobi hotel, the group said the report by Efficiency Monitoring Unit (EMU) that recommended the prosecution of the corrupt individuals at the council has not been executed.

“The report found that in most cases, the council or the board of trustees were not signing the Memorandum of Understanding with the beneficiary organisation, making it difficult to account for the disbursed money. As a result, the beneficiary organisation diverted the money to private use yet no disciplinary action has been taken against those responsible,” said Njoroge.
