Kandie forms team to restore Westgate mall

Nairobi, Kenya: East African Affairs Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie has appointed a 16-member committee to advice on the rapid restoration of the Westgate Shopping Mall.

The committee, which will be chaired by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, will among other things give direction on the speedy rebuilding and subsequent opening of the mall, general retail sector resilience and restitution of public confidence.

The team shall have the power to hold such meetings, public forums and consultations as it shall consider necessary for the performance of its tasks; receive evidence from any person and co-opt experts’ particular areas when necessary.

Kidero’s team is expected to deliver a report to Kandie within a month for subsequent action based on the recommendations. Kandie gazetted the members on Friday last week and directed that they begin work immediately.

“Following the unforeseen event where loss of life and damage to property occurred due to the act of terrorism at the Westgate mall, the Cabinet Secretary has appointed a committee to advice on the rapid restoration of the Westgate shopping mall, general retail sector resilience and restitution of public confidence,” reads part of the gazette notice.

Committee members include Nakumatt boss Atul Shah, Monica Thirima, Faiyaz Kurji, Mary Wahome, Maina Kiroro, Levin Mwandi, Sagi Vaknin, Joseph Kosure David Muigua and Jane Makori, among others.
