Kasarani Member of Parliament (MP) John Njoroge is expected in court Thursday morning to face corruption charges.
Kasarani MP John Njoroge
This was after he was arrested yesterday for allegedly demanding a Sh150,000 bribe from a businessman over a Constituency Development (CDF) project.
Njoroge who is a former Nairobi Deputy Mayor, was arrested yesterday at a city restaurant as he received Sh100,000, part of the bribe he had demanded. He did not know the money he was receiving was marked.
This was after officials from Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) set a trap on him.
According to EACC CEO Halakhe Waqo, they received a complaint from a contractor in the constituency that the MP was demanding a bribe of Sh150,000 to enable him authorise his payment of Sh3.3 million from the CDF project.
“We received complaints that the MP was demanding the money so that he could approve Sh3,342,716 payment for an already completed tuition block at Baba Dogo Road Secondary school,” said Waqo.
He added: “Njoroge will be charged tomorrow (today) at the Anti-Corruption Court.”
The MP, however, denied the allegations as he was escorted in a police car after several hours of questioning at the Commission’s headquarters.
He said he was being taken to Kilimani Police Station for booking.
