Participants included cabinet secretaries, government officials, diplomats and county governors’ spouses. They jogged around Government Square from KICC, along Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road and back to KICC.

The marathon is aimed at raising awareness and funds to increase support for maternal, newborn and child health in all the 47 counties in a campaign dubbed ‘Beyond Zero’.

Through the initiative, the First Lady seeks to mobilise resources for purchase of mobile clinics to augment the existing health services and therefore make healthcare accessible to underprivileged Kenyans.

Margaret said mothers and children should not be left to die from pneumonia, malaria, diarrhoea, HIV transmitted from their mothers and other avoidable causes.

“Too few of us know enough about HIV transmission from mothers to children, or about improving maternal, newborn and child health. If we don’t raise awareness, nothing will change,” she said.
