As much as eight countries across the world practise forced anal exams of suspected gays. Kenya is one of the countries, but it may soon end such humiliating and intrusive torture.
A Kenyan court heard a constitutional challenge to it and signaled the days may be numbered to the abhorrent practice.
Nairobi-based activist for Human Rights Watch, Neela Ghoshal, said it is sad the practise which is condemned by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture is still being authorized in Kenya to continue.
Forced anal examinations are primarily not about investigation in fact but it is all about humilitation. It is a practice that prevailed in the 19th century to determine whether homosexual suspect has been engaged in anal sex. Major medical associations have disavowed it long ago citing it only reveals about recent extreme trauma such as in the case of rape and not consensual intercourse.
In the practice the suspects are made to strip naked and either put legs up in stirrups or bend over. Doctor forcibly penetrate his finger to determine the shape of the anus to know whether anal intercourse has taken place.
Ghosal said, “Anal examinations prove nothing, and they accomplish nothing, other than humiliating and demeaning people who are considered moral outcasts.”
