The Minister of State in the President’s office (Social Relations and Coordination), Mr Stephen Wasira, has called upon leaders in six regions in the Lake Zone to come up with strategies that enable the public utilize natural resources in the area.
The natural resources include fertile land, minerals and lake Victoria which can be used to alleviate poverty among residents living in the lake zone. Mr Wasira made the remarks when closing Nanenane Agriculture Exhibitions in the lake regions at Nyamhon’olo grounds, outside Mwanza city.
“Despite there being more than a third of human resources and fertile land with enough rains in some areas, such as Kagera, Geita, Kahama and Tarime, poverty and hunger still looms in those areas every year,” he explained.
He said in spite of the public working so hard, they are not using farming technology, noting that the current 300 kilogrammes of cotton produced in one hectare would increase to 1000 kilogrammes with modern technologies.
Mr Wasira said while everyone is celebrating the Nanenane Agricultural shows, they should also address the many challenges experienced,” she said. “I am giving you a challenge, leaders in these regions should build modern buildings to enable other countries in the great lake region to participate in these exhibitions,” he explained.
Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Mr Evarist Ndikilo said this is the first time for Mwanza to prepare such exhibitions, whereby 32 municipal councils out of 34 participated and other 135 institutions and promised to improve the Agriculture show, to attract more people, both at the local and International level.
