Largest Tanzanite gemstone on display in Hong Kong

According to Tanzania Mineral Dealers Association (TAMIDA) president Sammy Mollel said several rare gemstones had been excavated from the country in recent past and most of those were never declared until now. The minerals were smuggled clandestinely out of Tanzania.

He added the latest discovered weighs more than 500 grams at the time of mining in Mirerani. Now, following cutting and polishing, it weighs 347 grams. This is for the first time that such a huge size gemstone has been mined by small-scale miners, which ascertains to be capable of accomplishing major things.

Mollel further said that earlier the large firms used to hide such big gemstones and declared just the smaller ones.

In the current market the gemstone is worth USD 105,000.

The Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair is to be held from 20 June to 23 June. It is the 32nd anniversary of the fair that has a reputation of being one of top three fine jewellery events in Asia.

Each year the fair attracts visitors from across the world and in thousands.

Meanwhile, Tanzania’s earnings from minerals have climbed to more than 310 billion/- from 196 billion/- in recent past.

The country lately inaugurated Arusha Mineral Trading Center to facilitate transactions of gems and minerals.
