Leaders at different stages have been challenged to make sure that natural resources are utilized for the benefit and interests of people’s welfare and development.
This is one of the messages echoed during the Mzumbe University’s Nyerere Day held at the varsity’s main campus in Morogoro recently.
Speaking at the annual event to honour the ideas of the late father of the nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Mzumbe University Vice Chancellor, Prof Joseph Kuzilwa said the nation’s natural resources should be used for the benefit of the country.
He noted that it is hurting to see Tanzania being among the poorest nation irrespective of abundant natural resources the nation possesses. “Let us make good use of our natural resources,” he said, adding that Tanzania can achieve sustainable development if her natural resources will be managed well.
He noted that a lot have to be done now, should the country want to attain middle income nation by 2025. Remembering Mwalimu Nyerere, Prof Kuzilwa said that the legend loved his country and that he showed that through socialism and self reliance policy.
He explained that Mwalimu emphasised a need to wait extracting natural resources up to a time when the country will have expertise needed. “We have experts today but we lack technology and capital,” he said. He noted that there is a need to make sure that companies operating in Tanzania conduct their businesses openly and transparently for the benefit of the nation.
He urged academicians in the country to use their expertise and knowledge to help the nation in better use of her resources. On his part, the Chairman of Mzumbe University Council, Prof Daniel Mkude emphasised a need to emulate Mwalimu’s ideals by actions.
“Let us remember Mwalimu’s great ideas by acting,” he said. He said through Arusha Declaration, a lot were accomplished. He explained that there is every need for Tanzania to strengthen and establish more strong democratic institutions for development. On his part, the assistant lecturer at the university, Mr Theobald Theodory said there is a need to strengthen conduct of professional ethics and laws to safeguard natural resources.
