Liberia – Opp warns President Weah over Roots FM closure

The oppositions have united against President George Manneh Weah in Liberia over closure of local radio station Roots FM that is alleged to be anti-government.

The four opposition collaborating political parties (CPP) include former ruling Unity Party (UP), the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Liberty Party (LP) and the All Liberian Party (ALP).

Wilmot Paye from the Unity Party said, “We therefore call on President Weah to immediately and unconditionally reopen Roots FM and restore all of its equipment and facilities.”

The George Manneh Weah-led government has been lately not happy with Talk Show Host Henry Costa, main as well as harsh voice of the station.

Meanwhile, the pro-government radio station that uses tough words against the oppositions are airing programmes as usual.

Last week police had moved to bar Root FM from airing further programmes for considering it deemed as anti-Weah station. This was followed after Costa raised alarm that police had refused to release Justina Taylor, the victim of kidnapping, rape and torture, from a Catholic-run hospital to seek advanced medication.

Taylor however was released after clashes broke between protesters and police in Oldest Congo Town.

The October 10 live morning talk show of the station was equipped with heavy sounds of police trying break through a gate. It was a chaotic scene then and clash broke between loyalists of Costa and riot police outside the station on Ashum Street, Monrovia.

On October 11 Paye said the George Manneh Weah government will realized to have crossed red line.
