The Lions “Play for Sight” Charity Golf Day held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) over the weekend raised about 48m/- which will help people with eye problems.
Organised by Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima the 18 holes Stable Ford Format event brought together about 60 players. The tournament saw Hitesh Valambia, playing off handicap-15, put up an astonishing display to emerge the overall winner on countback with his four-under 40 points.
He started the day slowly to collect 16 points in the front nine, before coming to the back nine even stronger to add 24 points and stay atop. The countback forced the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) Vice- Chairman Joseph Tango, playing off handicap 13, to settle in the overall runner- up position with the same score.
Valambia and Tango’s handicap were chopped to 14 and 12 respectively. Iddi Mzaki, handicap-5, scooped the Division A trophy with three-under 39, as second place went to Hamis Ally, handicap-5, with 36 points.
In Division B, the trophy went to Dimish Mawji, playing off handicap-18, who also had an impressive score of 40 points, while Salum Iddi, handicap-13, was a runner- up with 39. Panth Gopal, handicap-27, returned 38 points to take Division C trophy as Lese Sayore, handicap- 21, finished second with 37 points.
The senior trophy went to handicap 26 Mohamed Diwani with 35 points, one above second placed Elia Mwaibanje, handicap-14. With stunning 40 points handicap-9 Vicky Elias won the ladies trophy, while Sarah Dennis was second with 37 points.
Speaking at an awards presentation ceremony the Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima president Mustafa Kudrati thanked the club for their kindness. “Dar es Salaam Gymkhana is not only a sporting institute but a club which has feelings for the needy people of Tanzania,” he said.
“The club has always been our partner in advancing eye care in Tanzania. Praises aren’t enough to thank this wonderful club for allowing Lions Club of Mzizima to stage this tournament and raise funds which enable us to reach the communities for whom a simple pair of glasses is a luxury, let alone eye operation,” said Kudrati.
The DGC honorary treasure Jackson Mwaikinda also thanked Lions for honouring the club by bringing the tournament and said their door is open to everyone.
