Magufuli Ban Rallies; Opposition Calls Undemocratic

Dar es Salaam – All types of opposition protests have been banned in the country till further notice. The move of Magufuli government has been described as undemocratic by the main opposition parties who had earlier called for nationwide rallies protesting against ban on live televising of parliamentary debates.

Police used tear gas on Tuesday to disperse a crowd rallying against undemocratic actions by the government.

The President John Magufuli’s government has also suspended seven opposition lawmakers from parliament.

Police official George Kyando said they were forced to use teargas as intelligence reports suggested violence outbreak could take place including planned civil disorder in the country.

A press statement released by police read, “The police hereby prohibits all demonstrations and public rallies from taking place beginning from today until the security situation improves.”

However, opposition party said the banning of their rallies was baseless as in the parliament they are thrown out if they want to air their views and outside the rallies are banned.

Freeman Mbowe, leader of the CHADEMA party, said excessive force has been used by the government in breaking up the rally.
