Malta President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is on a three-day visit to Ghana with spouse Edgar Prega to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and enhance economic cooperation along with exchange of products and services.
The couple was welcomed by Ghanian Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the Kotoko International Airport on Tuesday.
Chief of Staff, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and Mrs Catherine Afeku, Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts too accompanied the vice president at the airport.
The Maltese president attended a church service at Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka before meeting her counterpart Nana Akufo-Addo at the Flag Staff House.
Mrs Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca will also lead delegation of companies in Malta to explore emerging opportunities in the continent and invest on those.
The group will later visit the HopeXChange Medical Centre that has been set up by the Malta government as part of an initiative in several parts of Africa and those include capacity-building projects in IT, water engineering and orphanages.
The HopeXChange is equipped with 80 beds and is located in Kumasi.
Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is the 9th President of Malta who assumed office on 4 April 2014 succeeding George Abela. She was then 55 and is the youngest person to assume the president office.
She was previously a member of the Labour Party and served as Member of Parliament between 1998 and 2014.
She hosted Queen Elizabeth II at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015. In the same year she received from University of Warwick an Honorary Professor of Politics and International Studies degree.
