Several buildings that have been under construction at Kurumwa Ward Secondary School in the Northern Tarime District are being demolished after officials established that they are substandard.
They included two classrooms, laboratory, teachers’ houses and a toilet.
“Already, two buildings have been demolished and the rest must be destroyed because of poor work. Even the bricks used are breaking into pieces when one touches them,” the Tarime District Council Chairman, Mr Amos Sagara, said shortly after visiting the project on Wednesday evening.
He said a Dar es salaam-based contractor was awarded a tender by Tarime District Council to set up the education facilities in order to improve learning environment at the public school recently, but the company has failed to deliver.
Around 216m/- has been set aside to finance the construction of the buildings, according to Mr Sagara.
“Even the District Council Finance Committee visited the project recently and was shocked with what is happening at the site. The committee agreed that the buildings must be demolished and the work start afresh,” the top council leader said.
Kurumwa is one of many ward secondary schools still facing shortages of essential learning facilities in Mara Region. The government pumps millions of shillings to set up infrastructure in ward secondary schools across the country, but misuse of the funds may end up frustrating the efforts.
