The Executive Secretary of the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), Mr Kajubi Mukajanga, has urged journalists to enhance the quality of reporting in their media houses.
He said in this age and time the question of quality reporting was paramount, pledging that MCT would continue to facilitate media growth in the country in collaboration with other media stakeholders.
Mr Mukajanga was addressing an editors’ meeting hosted by MCT to discuss a 2012-2015 baseline study.
He said the Council has been adopting various strategic with a view to effective improvement of media products, in collaboration with stakeholders including editors, journalists and press clubs. According to Mukajanga, one of the programmes which MCT has been undertaking was to improve and empower journalists through training and meetings with editors.
Speaking about the ongoing study, the MCT chief said it focused on identifying the status of the media sector in the country, including its quality, achievements, shortcomings and challenges so they could chart the way forward.
“MCT has been undertaking such studies in order to scientifically analyse matters in order to know how far it has succeeded in improving the media sector through its programmes,” he pointed out.
For his part, the MCT Arbitration and Ethics Manager, Mr Allan Lawa, said ethical standards among media people had improved, but stressed that there was still room for improvement.
“Frankly speaking, the level of ethical practice among media personnel has improved compared to previous years. However, we still have some challenges to address,” Mr Lawa said.
The MCT Publication, Research and Documentation Manager, Mr John Mireny, said the baseline study would help in making a realistic analysis, as to whether MCT had achieved its goals at the end of the programme and to what level.
