Media warned over trading accusations

The media fraternity in the country has been urged to avoid involving themselves in business wrangles and instead concentrate on informing the public on the current issues.

Responding to recent media reports over reckless accident occurrences, the Tanzania Distilleries Limited Managing Director Mr David Mgwassa accused one weekly for tarnishing image of other companies.

Recently, a local newspaper claimed that most road accidents are caused by drivers who indulge in sachet alcohol popularly known as “Viroba”. “We need to have healthy competition that makes us grow, and we welcome such competition, but it is sad when we come to realize that there are some media houses which are manipulated to give negative outlook of a particular company,” he said.

He added that media is a very important tool in the development of any country, but it should steer away from business competition and focus more on informing the public on burning issues.

The report which was published recently claimed that motorists, especially motorbike riders popularly known as “Boda boda”, are notorious for indulging in “Konyagi” sachets, which renders them careless.
