The move is aimed at easing dire shortages of medical staff quarters mostly in rural areas in the country. The project will be carried out in 70 district councils in the country in an effort to improve infrastructure in the health sector, which at present faces acute shortage of trained medical staff by 50 per cent.

The project was revealed by the Benjamin W Mkapa HIV/AIDS Foundation Executive Officer, Ms Ellen Mkondya, during a hand over ceremony of 20 out of 30 medical staff houses built in Rukwa Region, held at Chipu Village in Sumbawanga Municipality.

“The project write up was prepared in 2009, by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with other health stakeholders among them the Benjamin W Mkapa Foundation,” she added.

Ms Mkondya added that though such an ambitious project will see 700 houses being constructed in 70 district councils in the country, phase one which started in 2011 already has completed 90 staff houses in three regions including 50 in Mtwara, Rukwa 30 houses and the newly established Katavi Region 10.

“Already, 50 houses have been built and handed over to Mtwara Region authority between December 2012 and February 2013. As today (Saturday) we are handing over to the authority here 20 houses out of 30 which have been built in the region,” she added.

According to her, 10 of the completed houses in the region have been built in Sumbawanga Municipality, four houses in Sumbawanga District Council while six houses have been constructed in the newly established Kalambo District
