Mkapa lays down foundation stone for resource centre in Mwanza

Tanzanians have been asked to maintain peace and tranquility and continue praying for leaders to govern well.

Retired President Benjamin Mkapa

This call was made by former president Benjamin Mkapa in Mwanza City when he laid a foundation stone at the proposed Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Resource Centre at Bugando Hospital complex.

“I am happy when I meet the bishops and priests and wish I would have become a reverend father and preach peace and tranquility, but I did not make it,” Mkapa said.

The former president was happy to lay the foundation stone for the proposed resource centre as Mwalimu Nyerere had been his mentor.

The former president who was in the company of former Minister for Science and Higher Learning, Dr Pius Ng’wandu and former Saint Augustine University Tanzania (SAUT) Vice Chancellor Dr Charles Kitima said that without peace there can be no development, and health.

In a statement read by Fr Cleophas Mabula it was stated that the Tanzania Episcopal Conference aims at providing quality education.

Fr Mabula noted that the resource centre, a four storey building which will accommodate approximately 800 people is under construction at the cost of 3 bn/- for the first phase. The resource centre will coordinate services, programmes and resources that promote academic success for students, academic staff and researchers from different learning institutions and the community around Lake Zone.

The learning resource centre would be committed to supporting and guiding students as they endeavour to reach the highest standards of academic excellence. Students will be encouraged to take advantage of these resources and services early in their academic careers. The beneficiaries of this facility will include academic staff, students, Bugando Medical Centre doctors, researchers and the community at large
