Former President Benjamin Mkapa is on next Friday expected to impel fundraising for the construction of Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS)’s resource centre.

Retired President Benjamin Mkapa

The CUHAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Jacob Mtabaji, said during a press conference here that the fundraising that targets over 1bn/- aims at establishing the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre.

“The resource centre’s purpose is to serve the CUHAS medical and paramedical students, academic staff, researchers at the university and the society in the Lake Zone regions,” Prof. Mtabaji said.

He said that the resource centre will comprise a modern library, clinical skills reproduction laboratory, a virtual dissemination anatomy laboratory and ICT services such as video conferences, telemedicine as well as multimedia laboratory.

Prof. Mtabaji said that Mr Mkapa will grace the fundraising at Gold Crest Hotel in the city where CUHAS wellwishers are expected to support the university’s initiative, to develop a modern resource centre.

He said that since the start of the project in October last year, CUHAS has spent approximately 450m/- out of the budgeted 570m/- and so far, the construction of the ground and first floor beams has been done.

CUHAS started with a modest intake of students in one programme, the medical doctors’ programme.

The number of intake and courses later on increased and student enrolment stands at 1,536 students, putting pressure to expand access to educational materials such as on line journals, research findings to mention a few.

Before the fundraising, President Mkapa will on Friday place a foundation stone for the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre.
