A resident from Majimoto Village in Mlele District, Venence Mwaniwasa (46) died after excessively drinking illicit brew popularly known here as ‘gongo’ for several days on an empty stomach.

Reports have it that the deceased had been on a drinking spree since New Year vigil and was quoted to be saying he was happy to have seen the New Year.
The Katavi Regional Police Commander , Mr Dhahri Kidavashari, told reporters here that he died on January 05 this year at around 4pm at Majimoto Village in Mlele District.
It was further alleged that the deceased was seen drinking illicit brew in one of the ‘Pombe shops’ from early in the morning at a famous place in the village known as Centre.
According to the RPC, before Mwaniwasa died, his wife was worried over the health of her husband and communicated with him through a mobile phone, asking him to stop drinking and return home but he refused.
It was further alleged that while drunk he decided to go home but about 40 metres from his house he fell and died on the spot.
“The postmortem revealed that the cause of his death was excessive drinking and he was drinking without eating anything, added the RPC.
The RPC added that when he was searched they found a one-litre bottle of gongo in one of his pockets, while another bottle half full with the illicit brew was found lying besides his body.
