More bus drivers in Mwanza savor employment benefits

More than 200 commuter bus drivers in Mwanza have enjoyed employment benefits after signing one-year contracts with their employers.

In addition, 80 per cent of the 2,580 long distance bus drivers attained permanent and pensionable terms of employment between January to December, this year.

Giving the end of year report, the Chairman of the Lake Zone Drivers Association (VDA), Mr Petro Dede, said the employment terms have in a greater way reduced the number of road accidents.

He said it has come to their attention that majority of road accidents were due to the fact that most drivers were in a rush to earn extra money, above the target set by their employers.

Mr Dede said that they also demanded better working conditions especially infrastructure and he was thankful that the Nyakato Sokoni through Pasiansi and Butimba road had been improved.

However, he said that they were still working an extramile in mobilising drivers and bus conductors who are yet to join the group to do so through educating them. He said they are projecting that by the end of next year; all drivers will join the group and have better working contracts.
