Moro Open golf tournament to tee off TGU 2014 calendar

The Morogoro Open golf tournament will tee off the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) 2014 calendar.

The 36 holes stroke play event is scheduled for February 22 to 23 this year at the Morogoro Gymkhana Club.

TGU Vice- Chairman Joseph Tango told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam that preparations are in top gear to host the competition. “I can confirm that Morogoro Open will open our 2014 calendar.

All necessary preparations have been made to enable the event to take place,” he said.

Tango added that the Cargo Stars Tanzania Ltd (CSL) will, as usual, be the main sponsor of the annual national tournament. The company had been sponsoring the tournament since 1997 and CSL Managing Director Dioniz Malinzi said last year that they will continue doing so.

“We are trying to catch up with time, we have many tournaments coming up but we hope everything will go in our favour,” said Tango.

The Moro Open is Order of Merit TGU tournament that helps the union to identify good players, who can feature in the national team. Defending champion Nuru Mollel will be among those who will fight for the top honours.

The Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) youngster was in sparkling form when he won the title last year. He bounced back from a shot deficit to emerge winner with five shots.

National team ace Mollel started the final day a shot behind overnight leader Emmanuel Juma of Morogoro, who carded 72 in the first round.

However, Mollel, who posted one over par gross 73 in the first round, improved with a shot on the final day after returning level par 72 to total one over 145, which was also the overall best score — two better than that of professional Geoffrey Leverian, who won the pro category with 147.

Reigning junior champion Victor Joseph of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), who fired 140 nett, will be among title contenders at the main championship.

The in-form golfer last year led Tanzania to third place at the African Zone Five Golf Championship in Kenya, after winning the Nyerere Masters title and will want to prove that it was not a fluke.
