Mozambique on high cyclone alert

Northern Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique is threatened by a cyclone amid the persisting pain of deadly cyclone Idai lately that left 1,000 dead in the region.

According tos meteorologists the cyclone may make landfall late this week.

A tweet from Mozambique Meteorology Institute spokesman Aniceto Tembe reads, “The (weather) system we are talking about was a low pressure and today evolved into tropical depression.”

The department further added that depression was north of Madagascar island and it is approaching the Mozambique Channel where it may grow due to the warm conditions.

Tembe said it is projected a severe tropical cyclone may be hitting later this week and probably it may reach Category 3 tropical cyclone strength with 140 and 160 kilometers per hour wind speed.

He continued saying that according to the weather system projection the cyclone could mainly hit northern part of Cabo Delgado and southern part of Tanzania too.

Meanwhile, the public works ministry issued Monday a warning of such heavy rains with speedy winds could cause flood and destruction in Cabo Delgado province.

According to the ministry about 80,000 people are at risk.

Apart from natural calamities the hardline Islamists had launched deadly attacks in past year killing about 200 people.

In last month’s Idai cyclone at least 600 people were killed and 1.85 million were affected in Mozambique.

The cyclone brought disaster in Zimbabwe too killing 340 people.
