MPs to decide Gen Aronda‘s fate today

The appointments committee of Parliament will meet today to vet former chief of defense forces Gen Aronda Nyakairima as minister for internal affairs.

Last month, the committee deferred the approval of Gen Aronda pending consultations with the appointing authority President Yoweri Museveni over allegations that Aronda had not retired from the army as required by the law.

“We are meeting tomorrow (today) at 10:00am to vet Gen Aronda among other nominees,” said MP Theopista Ssentongo, a member of the appointments committee.

Ssentongo said the committee would also vet Sheema North MP Elioda Tumwesigye as nominee for minister of Health in charge of general duties.

The committee stayed his approval over concerns of regional imbalance in ministerial appointments by President Museveni.

Other nominees that are expected to be vetted by the committee include second deputy Inspector General of Government nominee Mariam Wangadya.
