Kenya: The Government has gazetted Friday as a public holiday to mark Idd ul Fitr — the end of theHoly Month of Ramadhan for Muslims.
Chief Kadhi Sheikh Ahmad Muhdhar said Muslim scholars will be on the lookout for the new moon marking the end of Ramadhan beginning today evening, in line with Muslim tradition, which follows the lunar rather than the solar calendar.
“If we see the new moon this evening, it means Muslims will not fast on Thursday, but we if don’t, we will break the fast on Friday, which is the gazetted public holiday. Regardless on when the moon is sighted, the holiday is Friday,” he said.
The Chief Kadhi advised Muslims and Kenyans to mark the holiday in the spirit of love and unity by sharing with the needy members of society.
