Mutabazi denies charges

Rwanda National Congress (RNC), dismisses the Ministry of Defense allegations that RNC has a criminal alliance with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

Lt Joel Mutabazi

Neither Lt Joel Mutabazi nor FDLR has entered into an agreement to conduct criminal activities. Brig Gen Joseph Nzabamwita was speaking with RFI about the said allegations in reference to Lt. Joel Mutabazi trial.

Today, Lt Mutabazi, the key witness in that trial, denied all the charges and revealed that the previous admission was a result of torture, threats, and intimidation. Mutabazi also revealed in the courtroom, that he was forced to confess after threats of being killed if he doesn’t admit to the charges.

Rwanda National Congress has reliable information that Lt Joel Mutabazi was tortured shortly after he was kidnapped. The Ministry of Defense and Rwandan government wants to use illegal information obtained from Joel Mutabazi as its weapon to continue to silence the opposition.

It should also be noted that, Maina Kiai, a UN rights official, just completed a tour in Rwanda, and in his findings, he told reporters that in Rwanda there is “a lack of space for individuals to express dissenting views.”

Maina Kiai was in Rwanda on a week-long tour on Rwanda’s invitation.
