Mwanza local authorities urged to build toilets

Seven local government authorities in Mwanza Region have been given a one-year ultimatum to ensure that they construct standard toilets in their respective areas to control epidemic disease.

Acting Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Mr Baraka Konisaga issued the ultimatum here saying the diseases cost more than 170 lives annually with 130,000 people suffering.

He said about 36,892 household in the region need to have clean and well built toilets by June, next year.

Mr Konisaga gave the ultimatum when launching a campaign to mobilise the Mwanza residents on the need and importance of keeping their city and environment clean. He said the region has to ensure that they meet the goals of having in place, the benchmark which they will be appraised upon.

If the target is met 53 per cent of the region resident will be having and using clean toilets and reduce the spread of epidemic diseases.

Mwanza Region health officer, Mr Fungo Masalu said the need for good toilets is a challenge especially in rural areas where the majority of the people cannot afford the facility due to financial constraints.
