Mzumbe varsity to train gas, oil experts


Mzumbe University, Dar es Salaam campus, in collaboration with South African based University, Stellenbosch, is preparing a Master Degree curriculum in managing huge projects in mining, gas and oil in the country.

The grand idea is envisaged at a time when Tanzania is in the process to explore more on huge gas deposits found recently. The varsity’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Joseph Kuzilwa, said during the 12th graduation ceremony of Mzumbe University, Dar es Salaam campus on Friday that the programmes would greatly help in developing a cadre of local experts in the areas some few years to come.

“These programmes are being started as a response to the nation’s development needs,” he said. Explaining further, he said that all countries that have benefited from their natural resources, have invested in developing their local expertise and emphasized that Tanzania should emulate such countries.

He also said that the university’s Council and Tanzania Commission for Universities have endorsed the university to start a Master degree of Leadership and Management effectively from 2014/2015. Also, Mzumbe in collaboration with ALTIS and a Catholic University of Milan in Italy are in the process to start a Master degree of Business Administration in Social Entrepreneurship.

On his part, the Chairman of Mzumbe University Council, Prof Daniel Mkude, urged lecturers to make sure that their academic works should be of high quality and that are published by renowned publishers in and outside the country.

Prof Mkude hailed the management for using the e-learning approach in teaching. “This will increase efficiency for both lecturers and students,” he said, adding that the e-learning approach will improve the quality of education offered.


Dar es Salaam campus was started in 2005 with 146 students and only two Master degree courses. A total of 1052 students were enrolled by the Dar Campus of which 504 were women and 548 men studying in more than 10 Master degree programmes offered now.

The Dar Campus expansion has contributed to the growth of Mzumbe University which has a total of 8,000 students. A total of 1225 graduates grouped in eight different programmes were conferred their masters’ degree.

Among those, there were 426 Master of Business Administration- Corporate Management; 219 Master of Science in Accounting and Finance; 161 Master of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management; 52 Master of Science in Marketing; 33 Executive MBA; 212 Master of Science in Human Resource Management; 119 Master of Public Administration and three graduates in Executive Master of Public Administration.
