Preparations for the anxiously awaited All Africa Golf Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2014 set for June 10-12 at the Windsor Golf Club in Nairobi are underway and the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) has already sent invitations to African countries.
Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) honorary secretary Anita Siwale confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ from Morogoro yesterday that she received an invitation from KLGU joint honorary secretary Mary Wambugu last week.
She said that the AACT event will precede the Kenyan Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship scheduled for June 15-16. In the invitation letter that this paper has its copy, Wambugu said: “KLGU is proud to announce that AACT 2014 will be held in our country.
We would be delighted if any amateur lady golfer in your country would be interested in participating in this prestigious sporting event in June 2014.” The organizers said that the proposed venues are the prestigious Windsor Golf club for the 56 holes AACT and Muthaiga Golf Club for the 36 holes Open Strokeplay.
Wambugu said teams are required to arrive in Nairobi on June 7 next year and the first official practice round will be on June 8 and 9 morning and flag raising ceremony will take place in the evening at Windsor.
The teams will be accommodated at Windsor Hotel and Utalii Hotel for nine nights including Kenya Ladies Open days and will be sponsored by the Royal Ancient & Golf Club of Scotland which is amateur golf’s world governing body.
Each country will have to pay a non-refundable deposit of 500 US dollars accompanied by national team entry. The last event was held in Gaborone, Botswana in 2012 where Tanzania finished fourth out of 22 African countries.
Defending champions South Africa have dominated the event since its introduction in 1992 except in 2006 at Lusaka, Zambia when the trophy went to Egypt the only other country that has managed to lift the title. The AACT was born as a biennial event in Harare, Zimbabwe at Chapman Golf Club in May 1992, with 12 countries taking part.
