NCCR goes to polls Thursday

A little known member of NCCR- Mageuzi, Charles Makofila, will on Thursday this week challenge James Mbatia for national chairmanship of the party during a general assembly to be held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall.

MP James Mbatia (NCCR-Mageuzi)

The party’s Acting Secretary General, Mosena Nyambabe, told journalists in Dar es Salaam that the assembly will also elect Vice-Chairpersons from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

“Apart from the three top positions, the general assembly will also elect 24 members of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

A total o 289 members are expected to attend the general assembly,” Mr Nyambabe said. The NEC members will include eight men and four men from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar as well as five men and three women members from Mainland and the Isles, respectively.

According to the Acting Secretary General, the assembly will elect two members to represent the youth as well as two members to represent special groups.

“After the general assembly on January 18 (Thursday) we will conduct a meeting of the Central Committee to elect Secretary General and two Deputy Secretary Generals, one from each part of the Union as well as national treasurer of the party,” he explained.

Adding; “Members of the general assembly will also review the constitution of the party and make amendments if need be.” During the Central Committee meeting the party will approve commissioners of regions, trustees as well as secretaries of the party’s zones.

NCCR-Mageuzi conducted its last election in 2009 where Mbatia was re-elected for the position. The party’s constitution has no term limits for its leaders. Meanwhile, the party announced yesterday that it had resolved its differences with Kigoma South MP David Kafulila.

Mr Kafulila was last year striped his membership and risked losing his seat as an MP but sought a court injunction which enabled him to continue serving as an MP.

Mr Nyambabe said the party’s CC had resolved to settle the matter out of court and that Mr Kafulila was now a bonafide member of NCCR-Mageuzi.
