About 20 umpires have confirmed participation in the netball level one umpiring seminar set to start today at the University of Dar es Salaam.
The Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (CHANETA) organised three-day seminar is part of preparations for this year’s National First Division Netball League to be held in Mbeya later this month. CHANETA Chairperson Anna Kibira told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam over the weekend that all is set for seminar.
“We have 20 umpires who have registered for the seminar, but we expect more entries tomorrow (today),” she said. Kibira said that CHANETA will pick at least ten umpires at the end of the seminar who will go to Mbeya to officiate at the national league which has so far attracted 16 teams.
“We have organized the seminar to get umpires who are updated with the rules and regulations governing the sport so as to have a fair tournament,” Kibira said. She added that netball rules and regulations are changing with time and it is, therefore, important for umpires to understand them.
During the seminar the umpires will undergo theoretical and practical tests and those who will obtain high marks will be selected to officiate at the national league.
The 16 teams that are preparing for the league are JKT Mbweni, Jeshi Stars, CMTU, Tumaini and Uhamiaji from Dar es Salaam; Moro Prisons, Tumbaku and Police Moro from Morogoro region.
Others are defending champions Filbert Bayi Foundation and JKT Ruvu from Coast region; Police Mwanza, Police Arusha, Ras Lindi, Tamisemi Dodoma. Hosts Mbeya will field Police Mbeya and Amambe.
