A one-day-old baby girl was on Thursday morning stolen from Mukono Health Center IV.
Mukono Police officer in charge of crime, Henry Mugumya identified the parents of the stolen baby as Brenda Namugaya, 22 and Geoffrey Nyongesa, 23, residents of Ngandu village in Mukono Central Division.
Mugumya said that unidentified woman stole the baby from an attendant, Cate Namwase.
He said that the woman lied to Namwase that the mother of the baby had sent for clothes from her.
“She asked Namwase to give her the baby and help to proceed with immunization. Unfortunately, she disappeared with the baby,” Mugumya said.
Namwase who is now under Police custody said that she believed the strange woman because the baby’s mother had just asked her to take the baby for immunization as she went to take a bath in the hospital bathroom.
“I thought that she met this woman from the bathroom and asked her for the clothes. I had intended to go back with the baby but she again asked me to hand it over to her and she proceeded with the immunization and I was to meet her after taking the clothes,” Namwase explained.
Dr. Geoffrey Kasirye who is the Health Center in charge said that by the time the baby was stolen, she was out of the hands of the facility.
“I appeal to the community to take full responsibility of their babies and property when they are in hospitals. Today, child stealing is becoming rampant,” said Kasirye.
