BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, August 7, 2013 – Today, the EU has announced new support for two development projects in Liberia.
One will promote local governance through activities such as on-the-job training and coaching, study and exchange visits, as well as office rehabilitation and refurbishment and peer-to-peer monitoring to encourage local participation.
The other project will help to connect regions that are isolated from the rest of the country during the rainy season through the rehabilitation and maintenance of three national roads.
The total support from the EU amounts to €10.4 million; about half of which will go to the decentralisation programme. EU support will also contribute to the creation of a Road Authority and a Road Fund to ensure sustainable and adequate maintenance of roads in the long run.
The programme will be implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Governance Commission with support from the United Nations Development Programme.
