The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) and the Chamber of Skilled Institute of Hamburg of German have launched an apprenticeship training pilot project, which is a dual system delivering vocational education and training.
The Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, said the system is demand driven and takes needs of employers as a priority in drawing up training programmes.
The dual apprenticeship training programme means most of the students’ courses are done while working for an employer who helps the apprentices learn their trade or profession, in exchange for their continuing labour for an agreed period after they have achieved measurable competencies.
“I know German has a well established apprenticeship training system and the strongest apprenticeship training system worldwide.
“I believe our partnership, in developing a similar system will help boost VETA’s role in addressing challenges facing industries,” Dr Kawambwa said.
Dr Kawambwa whose speech was read on his behalf by the Director of Vocational Education in the ministry, Mr Thomas Balile, said the partnership between the two institutions would help transfer of technology to Tanzania, where the industrial base is still small.
He said a total of 993,421 Euros (about 1.987bn/-) was contributed by the Hamburg Chamber of Skilled Craft Germany, towards supporting various activities of the programme which include tools and equipment, co-financing of the project, project monitoring and evaluation.
“The dual system ensures that during training young people are employed and learn not only the skills but ethics of the work itself,” he explained.
