Nyerere Cricket Cup to end weekend

Six cricket teams will battle it out in the Mwalimu Nyerere Cup Group A, B and C finals, which will be played in Dar es Salaam this weekend. The Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) official, Kazim Nasser, told the ‘Daily News’ on Thursday that the delayed event was earlier scheduled to end last year.

“We were, however, forced to delay it until this weekend for a number of reasons, which includes the association’s busy schedule towards the end of last year,” Nasser explained.

He confirmed that the teams secured a place in the final stage to run on a knock-out basis, after having won their semi-final matches in Group A, B and C last weekend.

Nasser said that in Division A, the finals will pit the Dar Gymkhana Club (DGC) team against their Aga Khan Club challengers. The DGC went through to the final after ousting TCA Academy Development by 106 runs, while Aga Khan secured a 96 runs victory over Veecom A.

Nasser said in Group B the final will be between Upanga and General Petroleum. The tough Group B saw Upanga beat Union by 94 runs to book a place in the final, as General Petroleum knocked-out Veecom B.

According to him, Group C final will bring TCA U-17 team against Kigogo. The TCA U-17 beat St. Gobain Juniors by 14 runs on their way to the final, as Kigogo record a 37 runs win over the same team.

Nasser said that four teams were registered in Group A in the event, which started on November 9, last year. There were also six teams in Group B and five battled it out in Group C.

The event aims to honour the memory of the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
