Nyirabu shines at Lugalo

University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) professor Mohabe Nyirabu bounced back to form at the weekend to emerge overall winner of the Weekly Golf Tournament at the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) Lugalo course in Dar es Salaam.

Playing off handicap-10 Nyirabu fired up with sizzling four-under 40 Stable Ford points to win the top prize for the first time. His fascinating score also earned him a place in Division A where he belongs.

He will now play with handicap 9 from 10. Nyirabu used to be one of few senior golfers playing at the top division, but was dropped to Division B few weeks ago due to his inconsistence in recent months.

The good sign that he was heading towards his usual good form started showing the previous week when he won the Division B top prize with 35 points before finishing third a day later at the Unicool Monthly Mug event, bringing in 75 nett.

Richard Gomes handicap-6 from Arusha Gymkhana Club also had a good day, returning level 36 to win Division A top prize. The previous week’s overall winner, Abdallah Yusuph, managed only three-over 33 points to snatch the runner-up prize.

He did it on count-back which saw two other players — Captain Samuel Hagu handicap-9 and handicap-5 Athumani Chiundu — settling behind him.

The Division B top prize went to Burure Magige, who impressed with one-under 37 points, while Gideon Sayore handicap-18 finished runner-up with his 36 points on count-back at the expense of David Muthungu handicap 12, who also collected the same score.

Handicap-20 Mohamed Rweyemamu scooped Division C top prize with level 36 points, while the second position went to handicap-19 Terrence Mwakaliku, who returned the same score.

Sophie Mathias handicap-24 collected 34 points to finish top in the ladies category as Sarah Denis handicap-23 finished runner-up with 32 points.
