Obekai residents stay in dark for 11days, impeach Kenya Power for neglecting them


Residents and business people at Obekai market and the surrounding in Teso south have decried long blackout following power failure for the last eleven days.

Talking to journalists from the market, the residents led by Aloice Oramisi said they are not able to go on with normal life and business due to power failure, “Almost all businesses here have been closed because of lack of power, we have to take our phones to charging or shave at Tangakona which is four kilometres away, or Kaliwa 3km away or Aterait, 2km away”

Obekai market has seven barbershops (vinyozi) which rely on electricity among other businesses and they have remained closed for all those days.

Shop owners who use refrigerators have also reported low business and loss as foodstaffs have decayed.

Obekai dispensary which heavily rely on electricity for most of its operations has not been left out as it share the same agony with residents.

The transformer, which is at the fence of the despensary blew off when it was raining.


A delegation from Obekai consisting of locals and businessmen visited Kenya Power offices in Busia and launched their complain with marketing manager who assured them that the problem will be solved by yesterday Monday 4th, but nothing tangible has been done upto the time of going to press.

They have impeached the company for failing to serve them despite paying their bills on time.

Residents of Kajoro village in Nambale are also going through the same after unknown people vandalised a transformer that serves them.

The transformer which is four hundred metres from St. Mary Nambale primary school was vandalised one week ago at night by thieves who diconnected it, siphoned fuel from it and left it lying on the ground functionless.

Among the homesteads that have been affected include that of Nambale Boys principal Mr. Solomon Sisuma and Nambale CDF chairman John Omunyin.
