One dies, eleven injured as military vehicle overturns


A soldier with the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) stationed at Ikola military camp in Katavi region, Mohamed Shauri (23), died on the spot while 11 other soldiers were severely injured after their military vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned at in Mgoroka area, along the Mpanda-Karema road in Mpanda district.

The Acting Katavi Regional Police Commander, Mr Joseph Shilinde, confirmed the road carnage, which occurred on Sunday afternoon at Mgoroka in the district.

According to the Acting RPC, the road accident involved a Land Cruiser car with registration number 2270 JW 97, property of TPDF, which was being driven by a soldier, Mussa Nahemba, which was heading to Ikola military camp from Mpanda township.

Mr Shilinde identified the injured soldiers as Nelson Mtweve (25), Juma Makame (24) , Jasta Shawa (35), who sustained head injuries and were flown to Lugalo Military Hospital in Dar es Salaam for further treatment.

Other wounded soldiers who were flown to Lugalo Military Hospital for close medical observation and treatment included Salim Shaame (25) and Said Mohamed (18), who sustained head injuries, and Ramadhan Toufik.


According to the acting RPC, two injured soldiers were treated and discharged from Mpanda district health facility. They were identified as Pafilus Gidion (25) and a police officer, Constable Anster Mpamba.

Mr Shilinde further explained that the body of the fallen soldier, Mohamed Shauri, had been flown to Zanzibar for burial.

He attributed the road accident to speeding, which was compounded after one of the back tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle after which it veered off the road and overturned.
