One week after Tabora accident: Sabena buses suspended

One week after Tanzanians lost at least 17 people in Sabena Bus accident happened at Kitunda village in Tabora Region, the Surface and Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority SUMATRA has stopped Sabena Company for investigations on the drivers’ competence and buses safety.

According to the statement released by SUMATRA Head of Public affairs yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Mr David Mziray said the Authority doubts on the quality of buses as have been involved in many accidents this year taking the lives of more than 20 passengers and at least 78 injuries.

Mziray said the initial investigation conducted by SUMATRA shows that the Tabora’s Sabena accident occurred as the Bus with registration No T 570 AAM was in high speed hence the driver failed to control it.

“We have decided to satisfy ourselves on the buses’ quality and drivers’ competence. The authority has ordered the owner of Sabena Company to communicate with vehicle inspection officer so that buses can start to be inspected as soon as possible.”

According to Tabora Regional Police Commander, Anthony Rutta Sabena bus carried more than 100 passengers where by 17 people died and 78 injured. The driver escaped soon after the accident.
