The construction of 50 boreholes supported by Ras Al Khaimah Gas Company has been proceeding well and an estimated 230,000 will benefit from the project, the Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) has said.
“The work has been going on well. We have 22 out of 50 boreholes ready,” said Dr Mustapha Garu, Director of ZAWA, thanking RAK for the 1.7bn/- project support.
He said the support would help minimize existing water problems on the Islands. Water production has dropped almost by half from three million litres formerly.
The scarcity is blamed on environmental degradation, climate change and dilapidated water infrastructure.
