Police have warned members of a pressure group 4GC against inciting violence, under the guise of escorting the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago to a tribunal hearing today (Monday).
Lukwago is expected to appear before the tribunal headed by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, to defend himself against a petition for his removal from office.
Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, said some leaders of 4GC were planning to use the event to hold rallies and demonstrations in the city and other parts of the country.
“We have received intelligence information that, there are opposition leaders mobilizing people in Kisseka, Owino, and Nakasero markets, Kasangati and Kalerwe to engage in criminal acts, including burning vehicles and Police units, and unlawful processions,” she said in a public statement.
Nabakooba said Police had not received any formal communication from the organizers of the demonstrations and processions to guide their security and traffic in the routes they intend to use.
She said the incident could pose a threat of Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebel infiltration, which could provide them opportunity to cause terror acts on unsuspecting public.
Alluding to previous demonstrations that turned rowdy, Nabakooba said Police would not allow the procession due to concerns that this could degenerate into riots, loss of life and damage to property.
“The Police therefore, shall not allow any unlawful processions and assemblies to be held, on the pretext of “escorting” individuals to the tribunal,” she said.
“For security and convenience of the Tribunal and the public, not all persons who turn up will be allowed into the premises.”
