Unguja – Zanzibar President-elect Ali Mohammed Shein will be taking oath of office in a ceremony led by Union President John Magufuli at Amaan Stadium. The sworning is expected to be by Zanzibar’s Chief Justice Othman Makungu.
Preparations are in full swing and security personnel are seen giving final touches on rehearsals for the ceremony.
The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman Jecha Salim announced Dr Shein as winner of the Sunday’s election rerun saying the CCM candidate has bagged 91.4 percent of votes.
The polls were boycotted by the main Opposition party CUF saying they had won the October 25 election of last year.
The October 2015 election of the island was annulled by election commission citing massive irregularities.
Security situation prior to the Sunday’s election was tensed with couple of reports of bomb attacks. Bot Unguja and Pemba islands were heavily guarded by security forces during the election that went peaceful.
Home Affairs minister Charles Kitwanga said huge number of security forces were deployed as there were lot of threats. He added police patrol will reduce as days pass by.
Shops and other businesses were closed from Saturday to Monday and now those are resuming operations. Life on the island is getting back to normal.
Dr Shein said they have won the election and it is tdhe time now to work to build Zanzibar.
He added, “I believe Dr Shein will hit the ground running just like President Magufuli to make Zanzibar’s economy shine again and ease the burden of poverty on ordinary citizens.”
