President Kagame receives Great Lakes Envoys to discuss conclusion of Kampala talks


President Kagame today received for discussions the United States and UN Secretary General Special Envoys to the Great Lakes, Mary Robinson and Russ Feingold who are touring the region as part of efforts to find a peaceful solution to the DRC crisis.

Speaking with the press after the meeting, Mary Robinson said:

“We came here from Kampala where we have been since yesterday, bringing to conclusion to the Kampala talks and welcomed the opportunity to come and brief President Kagame on the talks and seek his support for the conclusion of the talks today and he was encouraging. We are not parties to the talks but we have been very supportive of a good resolution and we now return to Kampala hopeful to see that resolution and we have a strong indication of support from President Kagame.”


The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mary Baine said the envoys assured President Kagame that the Kampala talks were going on smoothly and that they were expected to come to a conclusion quite soon. She said that the envoys also told President Kagame that MONUSCO was committed to take the fight to other armed groups including FDLR and that they understand that for there to be sustainable peace in Eastern Congo, all armed groups have to be neutralised.

The delegation included Mary Robinson, UNSG Special Envoy for the Great Lakes, Russ Feingold, US Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and the DRC, Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC and Head of MONUSCO, Koen Vervaeke, Senior EU Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region, Boubacar Diarra, Special Representative of the African Union to the Great Lakes Region and Modibo Touré, Special Advisor to the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region.
