RAF picks one for Africa junior championships

RWANDA Athletics Federation has picked 17-year old Felicien Muhitira to represent the country at the African Junior Championships to be held in Mauritius from August 29 through September 1.

“He was the best placed athlete in the trials and we hope he will stage a good performance,” the federation secretary general Johnson Rukundo told Times Sport yesterday.

Muhitira, who will take part in the 10,000m, stands to be promoted to the senior squad if he impresses in Mauritius.

Mauritius was mandated to host the 2013 Africa Junior Athletics Championship by the Confederation of African Athletics following internal wrangles within the South African Athletics Federation (Saaf).

The championship, initially set for June 27-30 in South Africa, was suspended by the continental body due to internal squabbles within Saaf administration, which was eventually dissolved.
