The former ‘Chappelle’s Show’ star reportedly asked the DJ to play Kanye West’s song as he left the stage.
Comedian Dave Chappelle was said walking off his show Thursday night, August 29. He allegedly stopped his routine while only a few minutes into his act at the Comcast Theatre in Hartford, Conn. which was part of the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival.
Talks on the internet suggested Chapelle was annoyed by the hecklers. When the crowd didn’t die down despite warning, the funnyman reportedly stopped telling jokes and sat on a stool smoking, reading a book and making a small chat to fulfill his time allotment.
One attendee Mike Wellman tweeted, “At one point Chapelle told the crowd, ‘If someone sitting next you is yelling, punch them in the kidney’.” He added, “Chapelle stayed on stage the entire length of his set. He even warned crowd throughout how many minutes had gone by and how many were left.”
Another wrote, “Dave chappelle has been on stage 30 minutes, and has not told one joke. He’s reading a book and smoking.” One other posted, “Dave Chappelle just walked off the stage and told the DJ to play ‘New Slaves’. The crowd continued to boo and heckle.”
The festival organizer even chastised the crowd on its Twitter account, “Hey Hartford! Pipe down and let Dave Chappelle do his thing!”
The Oddball and Curiosity Tour presented by Funny Or Die was supposed to mark his comeback to stand-up comedy. The roadshow will continue until later this fall.
