Rescue stations to improve marine disaster preparedness


In efforts to improve disaster preparedness and management in the Islands, Zanzibar is planning to establish five rescue stations, journalists were informed.

skagit“The ferry accidents have reminded us of the urgent need for solutions to curb disasters. If we work together, we will move on well,” said Mr Ali Juma Hamad, the Director in Department of Disaster Management.

He said that rescue centres will be established at Nungwi in the north of Unguja, Malindi in Zanzibar town, Makunduchi in South Unguja, Mkaoni in South Pemba, and Wete in North Pemba.

The director said that managing disasters remain a major challenge, and that reducing risks is important in reducing disasters. “Let us work as team.


For example those with responsibilities in marine transport should make sure that safety laws and regulations are adhered to,” said Mr Hamad adding that cheating should not be tolerated.

More than 1,500 people died in both Mv Spice Islanders and Mv Skagit accidents and researchers believe improved disaster response and management would have saved many lives.
