Rukwa, Katavi villages to have power


Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof. Sospeter Muhongo has said that the government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), will spend more than 40.5bn/- for implementation of a power distribution project in Rukwa and Katavi rural areas until 2015.

Prof. Muhongo said this on various occasions in both Rukwa and Katavi Regions when addressing public rallies during his three-day working tour. He visited and inspected several development projects undertaken by the Energy and Minerals Sectors.

The minister further explained that more than 30bn/- has been allocated by the government through REA to the implementation of Phase II in which 66 villages in Rukwa Region will be accessed to the power energy while more than 10.5bn/- will be spent to distributing power in rural areas in Katavi region.

Prof. Muhongo further noted that in Rukwa Region 19 villages in Nkasi District, 22 in Sumbawanga District and six in Sumbawanga Municipal Council, will benefits from the energy project carried out by the Rural Energy Agency. The ministry is currently looking for a contractor for the project which is expected to be wind up this month.


“This project of distributing electricity in rural areas in Rukwa Region, which is in the second phase is expected to take off next month. It will take 20 months to complete and this will be in June 2015.

A total of 14, 301 customers will be connected and will have reliable power supply,” added Prof. Muhongo. While in Katavi Region Prof. Muhongo also visited and inspected an energy project at Kibaoni and he inaugurated the Sumbawanga -Namanyere power project in Namanyere town which is the headquarters of Nkasi District.
