Cause of protests is yet not understood that erupted at the Kiziba Refugee Camp in Karongi District in Rwanda on Tuesday. The Rwanda National Police is learned to be launching an investigation soon, confirmed by the Rwanda’s Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees Affairs (Midimar) through a press statement on Wednesday.
The Kiziba Refugee Camp is home to thousands of Congolese refugees.
Earlier, the World Food Programme (WFP) announced to be reducing the food assistance by about one-fourth to the refugees due to shortage of funds. The decision has affected the refugees hosted in the country.
WFP is a partner UN agency and the Director of Refugees Affairs in the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees, Jean Claude Rwahama, said some of the refugees at the camp resorted to violence even after security personnel and local authorities were working to find a solution to the grievances.
Even though there were no fatalities, but several people were injured in the violence. Police will be carrying out thorough investigations and establish responsibility that such incidence does not occur again. Refugees are also cautioned to respect the laws of the host country.
Rwanda currently hosts five refugee camps and the Kiziba facility was set up in 1996 to provide shelter to thousands of Congolese refugees coming from the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Presently there are more than 17,000 refugees in the camp.
Meanwhile, the government is committed to provide safety of refugees hosted in the country and to work with various partners to improve the wellbeing of the refugees.
